Most images on the Internet are pretty simple. You get what you were expecting, without any hassle or unpleasant surprises. But this list is about something else.
Have you ever looked carefully at a seemingly ordinary picture, only to find out there's more to it? That's what the next images are all about. You may think you have it all figured out, but when you inspect them thoroughly, you realize there's a concealed truth, a hard-to-notice detail, or a hilarious hidden feature. These pictures have something that, once you see, cannot be unseen. So, let's start playing some tricks on our minds with these funny and surprising Internet gems.
The world, like the images on this list, is filled with interesting details that may not get noticed at first. So, maybe there's something we can learn here: not to take what we see for what it is, and always to look closer to find out the truth.
Crashing the Class
What now? This is a picture of a regular American classroom. It's neither funny nor interesting. But wait, don't give up right away. Look closely, and you will see it.
Before ignoring this picture and moving on to watching some cat videos on YouTube, you'll probably want to try and find the elephant in the room. And by elephant, we mean dog. Do you see him now? He's paying close attention to the lesson in the fourth row, acting as if he's the only student in the room who's interested in the subject. If you've spotted it, you're already doing better than the teacher, who probably has no idea he's lecturing a dog.
Considering how expensive college is right now, this dog has it lucky! Sure, he'll never be entitled to a diploma, but at least he's learning everything he wants for free. All of his sleepyheaded classmates don't seem so bright now, do they?
Pushing the Boundaries of Reality
We thought we knew how to make a distinction between a painting and a real-life photo. But we guess we were too quick on making that assumption.
In the faraway country of Namibia, on the Western African shore, there's an astounding natural park that's making us reconsider our notions of reality. When you combine the natural wonders of the Namib-Naukluft National Park with a skilled wildlife photographer, the result is a fantastic image that could pass as a Van Gogh painting in some European museum. It turns out the line between art and nature is so slight, and we can sometimes mistake the two. And in the end, weren't all artists inspired by nature.
Even though the trees and the desert sand look like a painting, it's the Namibian sky that truly astounds us. We'd love to visit Nambia to see this scenery first-hand. The sky looks like something out of this world as if we were standing on the surface of a distant, crazy planet.
Wedding Honesty
True love always makes our hearts melt with joy, and there are few things we like more than watching a loving couple commit to one another for the rest of their lives.
But love, like most things, is comprised of more than just the "good part." Marriages can be tough, even when true love is involved, and this picture is an accurate representation of that. At first glance, it seems like this couple is about to exchange vows. But when you look closely, you may realize that half of the people involved in the ceremony are not so sure about what they're doing. Pro tip? Look for the man's shoes.
Why is the groom so often the one having second thoughts? We'd love to see some pictures of a wedding in which the bride is the one experiencing cold feet. We guess that when it comes to making major life decisions, women know what they want.
It Can't Be Real... Or Can It?
We all know a fake town when we see one. This is not some drone footage; this is simply a picture of a cardboard model for a future housing complex. Or is it?
Looking closely may not help you with this one. No matter how hard you try, this will still look like a picture of some sort of Legoland or cardboard city. Not even the cars look real, but rather some fake miniatures meant to imitate reality. But you'll have to take our word for it: this is a real place, with actual houses and real people living in it. It's called the San Buenaventura Housing Complex, and it can be found in Mexico City.
Have you ever experienced trouble finding your car in a full parking lot? This is like that, but for houses. We cannot stop wondering: how do the people living in the Buenaventura Housing Complex know how to get home? Every house of its color looks the same!
The Space In-Between
We spend so much time looking closely at things that we sometimes forget to look closely at the space in-between things.
Empty spaces usually are not a priority for our eyes and brains. It takes some mental gymnastics to be able to adapt and see the shapes hidden in mid-air. But when we do, the outcome is surprisingly satisfying. We don't know who's the artist responsible for creating these original feminine shapes, but we cannot stop looking at it! At first glance, this sculpture looks like a random collection of boring vases. But there's a lot more to it than what first meets the eye.
Like most people, we're not big fans of those avant-garde paintings made out of a single black dot or an all-white canvas. But, who knows? Maybe we're just not looking closely enough. After all, art is full of mysteries that sometimes need to be uncovered.
They're Coming!
You better get your tinfoil hat right away, because aliens are real and they're coming to get us!
But wait, don't panic just yet. When taking a closer look at this picture, you'll probably realize that's not a U.F.O. at all. That is a "flying object" we can all identify as being a cloud. Namely, a type of cloud known as a lenticular cloud. These clouds form mostly in the troposphere and have a saucer-like appearance. It makes us wonder: how many of the inexplicable phenomena of the past were nothing but funky-shaped clouds? Probably a lot. Still, there are few things in nature more entertaining than trying to identify patterns and familiar shapes in the clouds.
Even though clouds tend to take identifiable shapes, we're still amazed by how much lenticular clouds look like a textbook U.F.O. We're pretty sure aliens have never visited our planet, but after seeing this, let's just say we're only 99% sure.
Level 100 Photobomb
Well, spotting things in our pictures hasn't been that hard, has it? But wait for it. Because this picture holds a secret so well-kept, you're probably going to scratch your head trying to find it.
It's a sports event, and a lovely couple has decided to celebrate the occasion with a photo. But is it just the two of them? Or is someone else joining in to watch the tennis game? Look closely, and you will see it. If not, let us give you a handy tip: focus on the space between the man and the woman, particularly under their arms. Do you see it now? If that's not a level 100 photobomb, we don't know what it is.
Most kids are loud, colorful, and hyperactive. But some kids are all about subtlety. This kid is undoubtedly a master of disguise who likes to play things cool and acting discreetly. He will probably never make for a great model, but he will always be a talented photobomber.
Unkempt Hair? Look Again!
This woman has decided to go to the jungle, and she loves the experience. Look at her feeling all relaxed, connecting with nature, and... Hey, wait a minute!
If you thought this girl's hair looked unkempt, we did too. We assumed it was from all the humidity of the jungle, which is not easy to deal with. But it turns out her hair holds a much deeper and scarier secret. And, as it seems, she is way braver than we would ever be if we found ourselves in this scenario. Even her traveling companions in the back cannot believe she's going along with this! We hope that's not a poisonous spider!
If you can have a giant spider walking on top of your head and still keep a smile on your face, you're one of our heroes. Nevermind on the head; we would run away screaming as soon as one of these monsters entered the room.
Can You Imagine a Shadowless World?
The question may sound strange, but believe us, it makes sense. Mainly because, in Hawaii, you don't have to imagine a shadowless world at all.
Due to a phenomenon that is known as the Lahaina Noon, there's a time of the day in Hawaii during which all shadows disappear. This happens because the sun is directly overhead, making for this unbelievable visual effect. Yes, these poles are there, even though they look like a CGI effect, and they're real. To see something like this in the U.S., you will have to travel to the state of Hawaii, which is the only place in America in which the Lahaina Noon phenomenon occurs.
We'd love to experience the Lahaina Noon first-hand, but we think we would be creeped out by a shadowless world. We don't appreciate our shadow enough, but judging by this picture, we will surely miss it dearly anytime it's gone.
Need a Hand?
This one is so hard to notice not even the graphic designers in charge of this promotion were able to spot it. But if you look closely, you will see it.
Nothing sells comfortable clothes like a picture of a happy family. But is this a real family, or is this is some kind of alien reunion? The reason we ask is that, typically, human beings don't have three arms. But the dad here seems to have an extra helping hand to assist his wife and two kids. Do you see it now? Photoshop errors make for some hilarious pictures, but we never thought we'd see a mistake like this in an actual promotion.
To be fair, this could've efficiently been dealt with if the graphic designers simply erased the right arm of the dad. But they didn't. And now they will have to make amends to restore their reputation. We would possibly only hire these guys if we were trying to make a bizarre horror movie.
Learn Math... And Beer!
It's weird enough to have a children's toy mimicking a cash register. But when you look closely, you may realize this toy is even more "fun" than you think.
It's all down to one simple word: beer. For some reason, the makers of this toy were okay with including 'beer' among the cash-registering options. So, in this freakish imaginary store, people can buy all kinds of goods, from dolls and toys to beer and fruit. It's a great tool to learn some numbers and basic math, but it can also teach children about a lot of other things. It's all fine as long as they get these numbers: 18 and 21, which is how old they will have to be to drink beer depending on the country.
With so much violence in movies and videogames, beer is not the worst thing your children can learn about. Sure, you don't want them to start having a taste, but a well-informed child is always better than a clueless one.
Watch Out For the Red Shirts
Can you imagine opening your closet and stumbling upon this? It looks like there's a man with a red-painted face hiding in there, but the reality is even more complicated.
No, this is not a picture of a camouflage master. This is simply a picture of a closet, but it can tell us a lot about the way our brains work. Humans have enhanced face perception, and that's what makes our minds look at a bunch of red shirts and see a human face. We experience the same thing when we look at houses with two parallel windows or some weirdly-shaped clouds. Due to our natural ability to recognize things like eyes and mouths in nature, this is an illusion our brains cannot avoid.
Even though this innate mental feature is not so useful now, it undoubtedly played a vital part back when we were hunter-gatherers living in the wild. When you're stuck in the jungle with a bunch of predators, the ability to spot eyes and mouths in unexpected places is a must!
Selfie Surprise
With selfies, social media profiles, likes, and comments, the Internet is excellent for self-absorbed people. But some take it a tad too far.
This woman was so focused on looking good on her brand new social media picture that she forgot to check the background before uploading. The result is a hilarious snap for the ages. Can you see it reflecting in the bathroom mirror? In case you're wondering, that's a thirsty dog who was not supposed to be there! But Karen thought she was looking so fine in this picture that she decided to ignore it simply. We only hope she's using a different photo for her LinkedIn profile.
This lady must have been distracted by taking pictures of herself that she forgot to give her dog water! The poor animal is so thirsty he was forced to sneak into the bathroom and drink from the only water source he could find.
The Ever-Sneaky Waldo
It's not easy to find Waldo in a book that's called "Where's Waldo?". So, imagine how hard it must be to spot him when he appears without giving notice.
This may seem like a typical wedding picture at first glance, but there's a good reason why the camera is panned the way it is. When you look closely, you realize this scene is about more than just a happy groom with his bride and his best men because the best man of them all is the crazy guy who decided to show up for the wedding dressed as a real-life Waldo! We've heard about photobombers before, but this joker is taking things to another level.
We'd love to take a look at the rest of the pictures from this wedding. How often does Waldo appear in there, and who has allowed for this bizarre thing to happen? Like it or not, it sure looks like it was great fun, and we think it was worth it!
Now That's What We Call Stealth!
It's a picture of a tacky couch, so what? Well, look again. You'll realize immediately there's something utterly odd about this picture.
You can start on the boots and follow the pattern to see the rest because there's a man in this photo, even though it may not seem so at first. He's a soldier wearing camouflage clothes, and he couldn't have picked a better place to hide from his General. He's not only in full-stealth mode, but he's also comfortably lying down on the couch. If this is a mission, we wouldn't mind joining the military! Looks way comfier than we've ever thought.
If the bad guys ever decide to sit on the couch, this lone ranger will be ready to strike. They will not even know what happened by the time this soldier is done with them. But while the bad guys don't come, our lone hero is going to take a long, long nap.
Snakes By The Loo
When it comes to snakes, there are two types of people in this world: the ones who love them, and the ones who run away anytime one of them appears.
To the first type of person, going to this bathroom is a fantastic experience. They will probably drink more liquids than they should just to have a chance to say hello to Mr. Snake. To the second, though, holding their pee will probably be the better option. If there's a time you don't want to be fearing for your life, that's when you're hitting the loo! So yeah, this bathroom is impressive and sure looks luxurious, but if this is a business, they may be scaring away half of their clientele with this!
Like it or not, this nature-themed bathroom will at least ensure one thing: excitement. Who said that going to the bathroom for a quick wee has to be boring? Not in this WC, where you can count on a cool-looking snake to keep you company.
Grilled or Baked?
Who doesn't like a nice grilled sandwich? It's a perfect snack for every cheese-lover out there, it's easy to make, and it tastes delicious.
But, as you've probably learned by now, things aren't always what they seem. This grilled sandwich looks tasty, yes, but it's not a grilled sandwich at all! When you look closely, you may realize there's something off about the melted cheese; it doesn't seem real. That's because this grilled sandwich is, in fact, a cake! Cake artists have designed this sandwich-shaped cake, and boy, aren't they talented? It looks so close to the real deal they almost got us for a second.
Cake designing has always been a thing, but cake artists are getting better than ever in recent years. Cakes shaped like everyday objects are pretty standard, and the most talented cake designers know how to play tricks on our minds.
It's a Trap!
There's nothing more relaxing than taking a nice walk through the woods. And this looks like a beautiful path to get lost and appreciate nature.
But is it? Or is it something else? Like most people who look at this picture, we thought we saw a walkable path in the forest. But this is, in reality, a river. Yes, that's water, and you probably don't want to get your feet in there! The leaves allow for this crazy visual illusion, and we feel kind of bad for the people who've surely mistaken this for a regular road. That's as good of a trap as we've ever seen.
Is there anything worst than getting wet without notice? You go for a walk in the forest to get away from the stress of the city, and you end up being entirely drenched by the circumstances. Just don't let this prevent you from appreciating nature.
Just Another Modern Bachelor Pad?
With a wooden ceiling, wooden floor, and wooden walls, this is a fantastic bachelor pad, which would look great with some state-of-the-art furniture. But, look again...
Is it a bachelor pad, or is it something else? It does seem kind of funky for a house, especially considering those big lumps on the floor. And that skylight appears to feature some sort of strange wires. That's because this is not an apartment at all. It's merely an acoustic guitar, photographed from the inside. We never thought we would say this, but we wouldn't mind living on the inside of a guitar! It seems like a very cozy home and a super cool place to invite some friends over.
If a talented photographer knows how to play with dimensions, he is capable of fooling us into believing almost anything. From the right angle, small things can look enormous and vice-versa. Even the inside of a guitar can look like a proper house.
You Think You Know What This Is, But You Don't
Don't worry; we also thought this was some sort of soft bread or croissant. But as it turns out, this is an entirely different thing.
It's not kind of thing you'd want to sink your teeth into, though. Why? Because this is a bar of soap. It turns out soap becomes all croissant-looking when it goes into the microwave for a couple of minutes. This is because the soap features tiny air pockets with water vapor trapped inside. When microwaved, the water vapor heats up, resulting in high-pressure areas in the soap. When the pressure becomes too much, the soap begins to expand and bubble. It's a great way to prank your friends, but not the best solution for an afternoon snack. At least it smells good!
According to the experts on YouTube, this experiment is safe, and the soap will not damage your microwave. Your microwave may smell like soap for hours, though, so please keep that in mind before trying it out. Also, you must use Ivory soap for the experiment to work.
A Face in the Snow
It's a basic rule of Darwinism: those who adapt best to their surroundings survive for longer. And this white rabbit is definitely in the right environment!
What white rabbit, you ask? Well, you need to look closely to spot him. Even though this picture looks like a close-up of a baked S'More, it's a wildlife photo of a white rabbit who doesn't like anyone to notice him. He's been resisting the predators for generations, all thanks to his white-as-snow fur. Can we please apply this tactic in the office, so our boss doesn't notice us? How we wish it were that simple.
This photo was so well-timed, and this rabbit is so well-adjusted to the surroundings that it almost seems like we're looking at a picture of a floating face. Other than his eyes, mouth, and black-tinted ears, this rabbit looks as though he could disappear entirely in the snow.
The Leg Illusion
Yes, we know it doesn't seem possible. Human beings cannot have three working legs. Or can they?
Polymelia is a type of congenital disability in which individuals have one or more extra limbs. It also affects animals, and while it's a rare condition, it was recorded all around the world, from South Africa to Detroit. We don't know for sure if this young woman is one of the few people in the world who suffer from polymelia, but it would explain a lot! Of course, maybe our eyes are just fooling us, and she only happens to be holding something that looks a lot like one of her legs.
Whatever it is, it matches the color of her stockings to perfection. And the craziest thing is that she was probably just trying to take a picture of herself with her new vase, and not trying to make us utterly confused.
How Many Do You Count?
Wind chimes and wind mobiles are great for a bunch of reasons. They can be used for decoration, as an aural garden ornament, or even for creating chance-based music!
But sometimes, wind chimes are also suitable for playing tricks on our brains. This purple glassy wind mobile looks like it is made out of six ribbons of twisty material. But is it? Look closely, and you'll see. It turns out this wind mobile doesn't have six ribbons at all, but only three! Our brains are deceived by the shadows on the wall, which look very realistic. And after a few glasses of wine, it will probably look like way more than six!
Our brains are so accustomed to seeing shadows that shadows can sometimes be at the center of some compelling visual illusions. The famous Checker-Shadow illusion is probably the best example, but there are a lot of surprising shadow-related visual tricks on the Internet.
A Chocolate Cake?
Out of all the things you can find in the wild, we didn't expect this—a chocolate cake that looks super tasty, nestled in the grass.
It turns out this is not a chocolate cake at all; it just looks like one. The reality is much more surprising, especially considering that this is a type of mushroom. Mushrooms can be odd-looking and are often lethal. This mushroom may seem edible, but you had better not put one of these near your mouth without thoroughly researching it first. Wild mushrooms can either kill you or make you see some weird things, so it's better if you stick with ones you buy at the grocery store.
Whether you like mushrooms or not, you have to admire their tenacity. These little fungi can grow in the most unexpected places and require nobody's help to spread around. Not to mention they're super tasty when incorporated into your cooking.
Human-Elephant
Yes, human brains are designed to recognize facial features everywhere. But this looks almost freakish!
This elephant, besides being a plant-loving cutie, also has an ear that's remarkably shaped like a human face. This visual illusion would probably not work from any other angle, but the resemblance is still impressive. The "expression" in this elephant's ear looks so real we cannot avoid wondering whether something supernatural is involved here. You have the perfect forehead, eyes that seem drawn, the perfectly lined-up nose, mouth, and chin, and even the human's ear! Coincidence or sorcery, you will probably never see anything like this ever again.
Sadly, we did some additional research, and we found out this elephant's ear was photoshopped to look more like a human face. It surely made us mad, but hey, we all know we're not supposed to believe everything we see on the Internet.
Green (Or Blue) Means Go
It's a universal rule of traffic: red means stop and green (or blue, depending on the area) means go. This said, what can we make of this highly confusing stop sign?
It turns out this is not a visual illusion, nor even a mistake! In the state of Hawaii, citizens are not allowed to have red signs on private property, which means this stop sign had to be blue not to be illegal. Following the law is the most important, but we still feel bad for the people who are forced to deal with this incredibly dubious stop. Some people blow hot and cold, but we never thought traffic signs could be this nuanced.
Nevermind the fantastic culture, the beautiful beaches, and the incredible weather. We have a new reason for vacationing in Hawaii: blue stop signs. Chances are you're not going to find one of these anywhere else in the world. It's almost a tourist attraction.
Thin As Paper!
No, you don't need glasses. And no, the photographer wasn't shaking when he took this photo. This is all about the talent of the butcher.
Even though this ham looks like it's blurred, that's nothing but a visual illusion created by the fact the meat was so thinly cut. The slices are so thin you can see from one slice of ham to the next, which makes for the wiggly sensation you experience when looking at this picture. We know ham tastes a lot better when cut thin, but this is a butcher who knows how to swing a knife like no other!
This picture is so tough on the eyes that we think ophthalmologists should use it for testing purposes. Meanwhile, we wouldn't mind getting a few slices of that thin ham on a nice piece of bread to enjoy a tasty snack!
Just Another Brick in the Wall
We're not sure about what happened here. But for some reason, it seems like the construction workers felt the need to add a different kind of brick to the wall.
That's not even a brick at all. Standing out like a black sheep in the middle of an all-white flock, a block of wood was sneakily installed in this brick wall without anyone realizing it. Maybe this is the result of a private joke, or perhaps it's a lazy solution to get the work done. Anyway, it feels like some slack was involved in this construction job, and we wouldn't be so happy to have this wooden block in our living room wall.
It's surprising that this particular block of wood had just the right size to fit in there. Is it possible that the construction workers are die-hard Pink Floyd fans? In the end, only they can explain what's happened here.
Does She Know How Lucky She Is?
This one is hard to spot even when you look closely. So, we've added a nice zoom for you to see what's truly going on.
It seems like this girl is not aware of how lucky she is. She simply continued to walk, not knowing her high-heel shoes were a couple of millimeters away from getting stuck in a steel grate. Considering how young she looks, let's call it beginner's luck? Women in high-heels may look relatively charming, depending on who's looking, but they pay a high price for their fashion choices. They're always forced to pay attention to the floor they're stepping on, not to mention the intense pressure applied to their feet.
Where have all the gentlemen gone, by the way? There's a chance this guy was simply distracted, but he should be the one walking on the steel grate side of the sidewalk. After all, those Nike shoes are not going to get stuck anywhere.
